Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon Immersion Rarity

I'm hardly an expert on this release, but saw one in remarkable condition this past weekend. The seller was asking $100 for it. I know it had all the posters and stuff itact, but is this thing REALLY woth $100?? I'm asking this from a 'rarity' standpoint.

It just seems that with soooo many copies of DSOTM being pressed in the 'vinyl days' surely there must have been a ton of these as well. Am I wrong on this? You input would be appreciated. It did spark my interest, because I remember so many of you folks in here mentioning it. Does it sound drastically different??

I grew up with the Australian quad vinyl LP of Dark Side of the Moon. I only ever played it in stereo.

Then when I got the Mofi half-speed vinyl, I was surprised at some of the differences in the mixes. Subsequent CD versions also differ from the old quad.

The quad mix seemed to have the background vocals (eg. The wailing bits in the background on 'Eclipse') much more prominent in the mix - to better effect, IMO (I know, that's the one I grew up with and got used to). There are other differences, some quite dramatic, which I can't recall right now.

I don't have that quad version any more, and I'd love to compare the different mixes. It would be great if the SACD version could include both mixes, wouldn't it? Click to expand. All that happens--since it's an SQ matrix disc--is it folds down naturally to stereo, assuming you have a decent TT and cart.

It will sound a bit more cluttered because, in the four separate speakers, certain instruments and vocals were isolated to some degree, so folding the LF/LR and RF/RR channels will tend to exaggerate certain aspects of the mix of any Quad album. It's still good fun to listen to, in any case: the chimes that begin 'Time' are much more startling even in regular stereo than any other mix I've heard. But if you have a 5.1 setup already, you can get some enjoyable--if not accurate--separation by using Pro Logic II, among other modes some receivers and amps have. In fact, if you have an outboard SQ decoder lying around and the SACD/DVD-A 6-channel input, you can plug in four channels to the corresponding inputs and get true Quad sound(or at least as close to it as SQ ever got). I have a CD-4 demodulator that's not currently plugged in(since the multi-channel unit uses it), but with a switch setup I could probably hook it up with little strain, and it would play back the old Quadradiscs quite nicely. As to the pricing question, if it's black vinyl, the price tends toward the $35-$75 range, and the price has been going up a bit each year, not least because EMI stopped pressing the regular stereo title some years ago, and I don't think it's being pressed anywhere on vinyl worldwide at the moment.

The bigger bucks can come with the colored vinyl pressings from various countries, and there are several of those. Mint colored vinyl copies can go anywhere from $100-$500, even more, depending on who's doing the bidding(completists are always a pain in the ass when it comes to driving up bids). Honestly, if I had the SQ decoder and didn't have a copy--but with the setup I've got--I'd spring for that $100 platter. It's uncommon rather than rare, but since the new SACD is going to have a new 5.1 remix, that original Quad mix--coupled with the album's legendary status worldwide--is going to make that price a bargain someday, IMHO. The real question is: how much do you love DSOTM?

Click to expand.Really? The toughest PF quad is ANIMALS; the others are easy to find, but WYWH is so highly coveted its price has just skyrocketed. If you ever see a colored vinyl DSOTM Quad(or any other color vinyl Quad, for that matter)BUY IT!!! Worth the investment and looks neat, too. As for BOC, I have a copy of SECRET TREATIES, and I think TYRANNY & MUTATION was a Quad, too.

I wasn't a big fan of their early Lp's overall, though some of the singles they put out were pretty good edited down. Now AGENTS OF FORTUNE is on 5.1 SACD, and it's pretty good fun; have to wait and see if they put out any others by BOC(FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN would be my next title). As for *the most pressed Quad* Lp of all time, that honor goes to ELVIS ALOHA FROM HAWAII VIA SATELLITE; amazingly, not all that common in mint condition despite the few million(at least)pressed worldwide.

THE BEST OF THE DOORS comes in second, as it was, along the the Elvis album, the only Quad-only(at the time, no stereo Lp counterpart)album to make Billboard's chart(though some others were issued). The Doors Lp was also the only quad ANYWHERE that I know of that was still in ptint on Quad into the mid '80s.
